S U R V I V E, Stranger Things and creepy nu-disco at SXSW
Please welcome S U R V I V E – the spectacular (or so, I reckon) synth band from Austin, Texas who are due to play SXSW 2017.
The world’s most influential music and cultural festival, South By South West published a teaser list last week, offering a sneak peek into some of the new talents the festival aims to present to a wider public. I took a listen to some of the artists and came across S U R V I V E. That’s no typo. It’s not Survive, S.U.R.V.I.V.E., S*U*R*V*I*V*E or any other spelling you may wan to come up with. It’s S U R V I V E!
You watched Stranger Things? You’ve heard S U R V I V E!
Netflix’ current hit streaming series Stranger Things is the current talk about town. Featuring Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Matthew Modine, Strange Things has captivated audiences across the globe but have you ever wondered “what’s that sound?”.
If you did, I’m please to say, it’s S U R V I V E who are the makers behind one of the most mysterious scores of the year that soundtracks Netflix’ Stranger Things.
Band members, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein were set to compose the hit Netflix series, when its film directors discovered the pair were part of a larger band and asked for the whole group to be involved. Stranger Things used the full force of the band to bring their apt 80’s synth power and who could imagine the show without that haunting score?
S U R V I V E – Austin’s band to take a closer listen
S U R V I V E might not be Austin’s most well-known band, despite having released a string of cassettes and vinyls since 2010 – and featuring on Stranger Things. But this may soon change.
The band has a knack for creating sweeping soundscapes. Experimenting with ambient and lo-fi synth, in the vein of artists like Goblin, Giorgio Moroder or John Carpenter, S U R V I V E are using a host of chunky vintage analog equipment with results reminiscent of vintage horror and sci-fi film scores.
Have a listen to the slowed-down nu-disco beats and creepy detuned synth stabs on the title A.H.B.. Pretty brilliant stuff, what’cha say?!
Continuing the cryptic name-game, A.H.B. will feature on the band’s upcoming release RR7349 (yes, that’s the title, folks) in September 2016 on Relapse Records, as well as on cassette through S U R V I V E’s own Holodeck record label. A full-lenght album is also available through Italian record label Mannequin Records.
Watch a casual, yet epic performance from the band during a Boiler Room x Moogfest Live Show (… spot the guy in the glasses feeling that synthy vibe!)

There’s a lot on the Web you can find on S U R V I V E but I suggest to start checking out the back catalogue on their own Bandcamp page, follow them on Facebook and unless you’re into cassettes and vinyl, add them to your fave playlist on Spotify (or do both!).
