Difficult to google, but worth the effort. MØ is Danish singer Kern Marie Ørsted who achieved break-through back in 2013 with her soulful and drifty vocals appearance on Avicii’s Dear Boy. Yep, that was MØ.
MØ, Mo, Moo, Mah, Moe…?!
Before going further, let’s clear that name question up once and for all. Unless you’re Danish or Swedish you might be wondering how to pronouce her name without being laughed at – guess you did it correct. You’d pronounce her name something like “Mooo” and translated from Danish means apparently something like “maiden” or “virgin”.
It’s Moo. But it’s very hard to say if you’re not from Scandinavia. I usually just say to people, ‘just say whatever you want.’ Moo, Mah, Muh, Muuwah … there are a lot of ways to say it, so it’s whatever. – MØ in an interview with Frontpsych (2014)
The Scandi singer, songwriter and producer creates beat laden, glitchy, soulful, dubbed-over tracks. Take her tune Pilgrim for instance. It’s the perfect intro to her debut album No Mythologies to Follow (2014) as it captures her style perfectly.

Dropping names, dropping beats
MØ’s influences reads like a long list of the who-is-who of contemporary electronic pop; Little Dragon, Santigold, J Dilla, Twin Shadow, Lykke Li, Sonic Youth and NYC’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Name-dropping is routine business in MØ’s world. She’s only released her debut album but can look back at a career that has her seen collaborating with the likes of Avicii, Iggy Azalea, Diplo, Major Lazer and DJ Snake on the stand-out track Kamikaze.
Following the unveiling of her latest single, Final Song, we are in line to get her upcoming new album and hopes to see MØ live on tour. Final Song, was co-written and produced by (achtung, more name-dropping…) Beyonce’s Lemonade collaborator MNEK.
Speaking about Final Song, MØ explained the story behind the tune as a spiritual and holistic inner search.
Final Song is about reconnecting with your inner strength. With your inner glow, passion, spirit animal, whatever – the force that keeps us going and doing what we love. (…) it’s not always easy and that’s what inspired me to write these lyrics. – MØ (2016)
MØ is one of the bright young hopes to check out. You may have heard her voice countless of times on all those hit records, but give her own tracks a chance – it’s well worth it.
